The concept of the 'cheat meal' occupies a strange place in weight-loss culture — simultaneously popular as a psychological relief valve and stigmatised as evidence of weak discipline. The research picture is more interesting and more useful than either of these framings. Planned breaks from dietary restriction — whether individual meals, planned higher-calorie days, or structured multi-week maintenance phases — have real effects on physiology, psychology, and long-term adherence. Understanding those effects helps you use them strategically rather than impulsively.
The problem that breaks are trying to solve
Continuous caloric restriction produces metabolic adaptation: the body reduces resting metabolic rate, reduces NEAT (non-exercise activity), increases hunger hormones (particularly ghrelin), and decreases satiety hormones (leptin). Despite spending the same total time in a deficit, the intermittent group lost more weight and more fat, retained more lean mass, and showed smaller reductions in resting metabolic rate. At 6-month follow-up, they had also regained less weight.

Structured 1–2 week diet breaks have better RCT support. Longer maintenance phases before resuming restriction are the gold standard for serious long-term weight management and the approach used by most experienced practitioners.
The psychological case for planned breaks
Beyond physiology, there is a strong psychological argument for planned breaks from restriction. Dietary restraint research shows that people who believe they are following a strict all-or-nothing diet respond to minor transgressions with dramatic overeating — the 'what-the-hell effect' described by Polivy and Herman.
