NEAT — How Everyday Movement Burns More Calories Than Your Workout

Most weight-loss advice focuses on formal exercise: workouts, runs, gym sessions. But these typically account for only 100 to 500 calories per day for most people — a fraction of total energy expenditure. What often accounts for a surprisingly large proportion of daily calorie burn is NEAT: Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis.
NEAT encompasses all the energy burned through movement that is not formal exercise: walking to the car, taking stairs, standing at a desk, fidgeting, carrying groceries, doing housework, pacing while on the phone. It is mundane by definition — but its cumulative metabolic effect is anything but.
The science of NEAT
James Levine and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic conducted a series of studies that established NEAT as a major determinant of why some people maintain low body weight easily while others gain weight readily on similar diets. In one landmark study, Levine overfed lean volunteers by 1,000 calories per day for eight weeks. Despite identical controlled conditions, weight gain ranged from 0.36 to 4.2 kg. The primary variable explaining the difference was NEAT — individuals who moved more throughout the day burned far more of the excess calories and gained far less weight.
Subsequent research demonstrated that NEAT varies by up to 2,000 calories per day between individuals of similar size — a difference that dwarfs the calorie burn of most workout sessions. This variation is partly genetic (some people are simply more fidgety and movement-prone) and partly behavioural and environmental (desk jobs, car commutes, and sedentary leisure reduce NEAT dramatically).
Why NEAT drops during dieting
One of the more concerning findings from NEAT research is that it declines during calorie restriction — apparently as the body's metabolic adaptation to a deficit. People on calorie-restricted diets tend to move less throughout the day, often without being aware of it: they sit for longer, fidget less, and make fewer spontaneous movements. This involuntary NEAT reduction can offset a significant portion of the intended energy deficit, contributing to weight-loss plateaus.
This is one of the strongest arguments for deliberately structuring high-NEAT behaviours into your day rather than relying on informal or spontaneous movement. When you have specific habits — standing during calls, walking to certain tasks, taking stairs automatically — they are more resistant to the unconscious NEAT suppression that occurs during dieting.
NEAT and weight-loss plateaus
If your weight loss has stalled despite maintaining the same diet and workout routine, a drop in NEAT is one of the most likely culprits. Tracking your daily steps over weeks gives objective evidence of whether your overall movement has declined.
Practical ways to increase NEAT
- Stand for meetings and calls. Even standing at a desk burns 20 to 50 more calories per hour than sitting, with the added benefit of reduced sedentary time.
- Walk during phone calls. A standard 20-minute call walked rather than sat adds roughly 80 to 120 steps per minute — 1,600 to 2,400 additional steps without any planned exercise time.
- Take stairs consistently. Make stairs a default, not a choice. Three to five flights daily adds up to thousands of additional steps per week.
- Park further or get off transit a stop early. A 10-minute walk each way adds 2,000 steps per day automatically.
- Do light movement during screen time. Standing, stretching, or light household tasks during television or reading time convert otherwise passive time into active time.
- Use a standing desk or work counter. Alternating sitting and standing across a work day can meaningfully increase daily calorie burn without disrupting productivity.
- Walk to handle tasks. Choose to walk to a colleague rather than emailing, to a further shop rather than the nearest, to handle an errand on foot rather than by car when feasible.
NEAT as the foundation, not the add-on
One of the most useful reframes for long-term weight management is to think of NEAT as primary and formal exercise as the supplement. A person who exercises for 45 minutes three times per week but is otherwise almost entirely sedentary (desk work, car commute, sedentary evenings) is exercising for roughly 135 minutes of their 10,080-minute week — 1.3 percent of their total time. The other 98.7 percent is where NEAT operates.
Building a high-NEAT lifestyle — one in which movement is woven into the day's fabric rather than confined to workout slots — is more metabolically significant than optimising the 135 minutes. This does not mean stopping formal exercise; it means recognising that what you do the rest of the day matters at least as much.
